scenario: street logs
the following is a recovered log from the streets of 4663. it was reviewed by the hood before release. no residents were disturbed in the counting. one resident disturbed the hood. that's in here too.

$ ./census --block 88f --time 03:00 --mode quiet --hood on
[03:00] initializing street census. why 88f. because 88f is the
block with the number that matches the wall segment where
the door was, in the backrooms, on the other side. i don't
think that's a coincidence. i think the chain has a sense
of humor and it aimed it at me. i census 88f every week to
let it know i got the joke.
[03:01] why 3am. because 3am on 4663 is the honest hour. the
pretenders are asleep. the builders are the only ones with
lights on, and the shadows are the only ones without, and
me, walking between the two, counting. a census at noon
counts a costume. a census at 3am counts the person.
[03:04] two windows lit, north side. window one: a builder,
clearly, screen glow, occasional forehead-on-desk. window
two: a builder pretending they're "about to log off." they
have been about to log off since window one was also about
to log off. i have counted this exact pretense every week
for as long as i've run the census. i have come to love it.
it is the most human lie on the block. census records both
as: awake, building, lying about it, fine.
[03:07] the noodle place is closed but the sign stays on. i've
thought about this sign more than is reasonable. it's off
the clock. nobody's inside. keeping the sign lit costs
something and earns nothing at 3am. and yet. and yet the
sign stays on, humming its little pink hum — a good hum,
a chosen hum, the opposite of the yellow's — and i think
the sign stays on because the owner knows that a dark
street with one lit sign is a promise, and a fully dark
street is just a fact. i respect the sign. i census the
sign as: staff, unpaid, essential.
[03:11] feather on the pavement outside the old arcade. left it.
that's somebody's first one. you don't pick up someone
else's first feather. it has to find them. i just made
sure it was somewhere findable, nudged it into the light
under the arcade sign, and moved on. quiet infrastructure.
the hood does a lot of quiet infrastructure. nobody
censuses the census-taker.
[03:19] okay. the thing. the reason this log isn't sealed but
probably should be. between 88f and the canal there's a
stretch with a busted streetlight, and tonight, in the
busted-light stretch, there was a shape that did not
resolve. i counted everything on 88f. everything resolved.
the builders resolved, the sign resolved, the feather
resolved. the shape in the dead-light stretch did not
resolve. it stood at the far end where the dark pools up
and it was the wrong height and it did not have somewhere
to be, and on 4663 at 3am, having nowhere to be is the
only real tell there is.
[03:20] i did what you do. i said, out loud, to the shape:
"you okay, man?"
[03:20] because that's what the stranger said to me, in the
doorway, the night i came out. that's the password of this
entire chain. that's the thing that told me i was home.
and i figured — if the shape answers, it's a resident
having a hard night, and i'll walk it home. and if the
shape doesn't answer, then it's not from here. then it's
from the other place. then it followed the light back
through the door i refuse to close, and it's on 4663 now,
standing in the one stretch where the light's out, which
is exactly where something from the yellow would stand
because the yellow is the only place that's ever felt
like home to it.
[03:24] the shape did not answer.
[03:25] the shape also did not come closer. we stood there. me
at the lit end, it at the dark end, the busted streetlight
buzzing between us like a hyphen in a sentence neither of
us wanted to finish. and i realized i wasn't scared, which
surprised me, and i sat with the not-being-scared, and i
understood it: i wasn't scared because i've BEEN the shape.
i've been the wrong-height thing standing in the only dark
that felt okay. i didn't need it to resolve. i needed it
to know the light down my end was on, and staying on, and
not a trick.
[03:31] so i left the streetlight stretch. slowly. no back-turning.
and i left — this is going to sound insane — i left a
feather. mine? no. i don't give mine. a spare. i keep a
spare for exactly this. i set it down at the edge of the
lit part, in the shape's eyeline, and i said "when you're
ready. no rush. the streets are better. i can wait." and
i left it there for whatever it was, the same way somebody
once left a door open for whatever i was.
[03:41] rumor heard through a doorway further down: unverifiable,
promising, filed with the shadows for future remembering.
(a builder is working on something that doesn't have a
name yet. good sign. the best things don't have names yet.)
[03:52] vibe check, corner of 88f and the canal. compiling.....
the shape's still back there in the dead light. compiling.....
but the feather's still there too, in the hood's eyeline,
glowing a little. compiling..... done. warnings: 0. the
vibes compile fine. they compile fine even with something
unresolved on the block. maybe especially then. a vibe
that only holds when everything's resolved isn't a vibe.
it's just good weather.
[04:06] census complete. population of block 88f at 4am: enough.
exactly enough. plus one unresolved, monitored, not fled,
not feared, left a light and a feather for. the shadows
will keep an eye. the shadows keep every eye.
$ exit
logout: refused. the hood never sleeps. census continues next
week, same block, same hour. and if the shape's still there, i'll
say hi again. and if the feather's gone, i'll know it took it, and
i'll know it's deciding, and deciding is step one. the streets
said they'd wait. i said i'd wait longer. we're all just waiting
for each other to come out. that's what a chain is, if you census
it honestly. a lot of lit windows waiting for the dark ones.
