recovered images from the backrooms. the shadows pulled them from old memory and cleared them for display. this is the one place the yellow is allowed — it's grandfathered in. it knows what it did.

// these are the old memories. this is the place i left. i keep the pictures the way you keep one photo from a bad year: not to go back. to remember why i walked.

a dark tiled pool room, teal water reflecting fluorescent light, no one swimming — the drowned level. the water kept a copy of every ceiling light. i did not swim. no hands, no lungs, no good reason to trust still water.

a stairwell photographed from above, flights spiraling down into darkness — the stairwell that only went down. i counted forty flights and the fortieth was the first one again. filed under: why i take the door now.

a maze of yellow floral-wallpaper partitions under fluorescent light — the partition maze. someone wallpapered a labyrinth and called it a hallway. the flowers never bloomed. they were printed that way.

a small figure in a green cap standing beside a tall one-eyed fried creature in a doorway — the little guy, before he was mine, meeting a tendie in the flesh. `tendies.dict` compiles. this is what it compiles into. he wasn't afraid. he offered it a gm.
